www.selfcateringitaly.co.uk - 1 5 2012. Walk To Santuario di Trezzo & the Swiss Border from Dumenza - From Dumenza walk up Via XX Settembre. When you get to the signs pointing to Santuario di Trezzo and Valico di Astano turn right onto a stepped pathway (Via al Santuario).The stepped pathway continues its wide winding way up the mountain, passing stations of the cross on the way.

When you reach Santuario di Trezzo you will see spectacular views of the whole valley, with snow capped mountains behind an Lake Maggiore below. It was consecrated in 1526. It is only used during the Italian August Bank holiday (15th August).The path then leads up to the Valico di Astano (Swiss border) through the woods, passing large rocks and mountain streams.

In winter you may pass a small frozen lake. The border with Switzerland is marked with a stone that has I on one side for Italy and S on the other for Switzerland. Once on the Swiss side a tarmac road leads to the old customs house "Vecchia Dogana Svizzera Astano". The walk will take you at least 1 hour to get to the Swiss border from Dumenza,
