Centovalli railway is one of Switzerland’s most scenic rides. Trains run from under Locarno station on the northern part of Lake Maggiore into the spectacular Centovalli. It is named after its large number of side valleys. For a full day out you can buy a Lago Maggiore Express ticket, which combines the Centovalli line with a train at Domodossola south to the Maggiore resort of Stresa, then a boat back north to Locarno (9hr total). If you do not want to buy a train ticket you there is a road.

The Centovalli has plenty of hiking with trails for all abilities crossing the mountians and between stations on the line. Bicycles are available for hire at more than 100 Swiss railway stations including the border station at Camedo on the Centovalli railway.

To get to the railway we drove to Locarno on the shores of lake Maggiore in Switzerland and parked in the multi-storey opposite the main railway station. We bought our train tickets to Camedo on the Swiss Italian border from the automatic machine using credit cards. The return tickets cost just over 20CHF each.

The train takes about 40 minutes to reach Camedo, winding up the side of the valley as it goes, with frequent stops at the small stations. As it was early April when we went there was still plenty of snow on the mountaintop and most of the trees had yet to turn green. There is also a road running alongside the railway and if you have a car it is obviously cheaper than catching a train.

When we got to Camedo the train terminated and it was time for lunch. So we walked up to the road, past the post office and found the Osteria Grutli and sat outside where we had Piatto Ticinese, a section of salami and cheeses with bread, plus cappuccino. Also included were stunning views over the Centovalli. We decided not to sample the small goat that was also on the menu. A man with a huge moustach served us and luckily he took euros.

We spent about an hour in Camedo and then it was time to catch the train back. At the sation in Camedo you can also hire bikes one way to take you back downhill to Ponte Brolle much further down the line close to Locarno for about CHF15. The ride over bridges, gorges and through the villages of Centovalli is said to be easy and fun. We took the train down. The bike ride down will surely be something to look forward to on another visit to the Cento valley.
